Movie Review: Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
PG-13; 113 min

"Edge of Tomorrow is at both times familiar and new, providing one of the best new vehicles for Tom Cruise in years."

Edge of Tomorrow is a fantastic film going experience that allows Cruise to play a very different kind of hero to a very entertaining end. The action is great, the chemistry between Cruise and Blunt is spot on and it does enough to engage you in what you first feel is a predictable story. Yes, this is Groundhog's Day wrapped in Sci Fi trappings, but the storytelling allows it to feel fresh and even surprising at times. If you think you'll skip this one since it's just another Tom Cruise film, you'd be missing out on a great movie. I give Edge of Tomorrow a very big GREEN LIGHT.

RED LIGHTS
  • The "Hive Mind" has been overused in sci fi, making this global threat seem like nothing if all you have to do is "kill this and all the bad guys die."
YELLOW LIGHTS
  • The eluded to romance between Blunt and Cruise seems a little forced and unnecessary, which is a shame because their chemistry as "teacher and student" is fantastic.
  • The score by Christophe Beck is serviceable, in that it heightens some moments while not ruining others.
  • One of my least favorite film tropes is used: News Reports give you all the background information to open the film. This is somewhat forgivable, as it does set up Cruise's character to some degree.
GREEN LIGHTS
  • Tom Cruise has a great character arc in the film, giving him the most range I've seen him have since Jerry Mcguire.
  • A surprisingly strong script allows the "Live.Die.Repeat" story tool to never feel like a rehash of Groundhog's Day.
  • The special effects are spot on, while the design of the aliens give us a truly terrifying enemy.
  • The supporting cast do a great job of making us cheer for them, while not taking to much away from Cruise and Blunt.
  • The film hits that same sweet spot The Avengers did, as I had a big smile on my face as the world seemed to be crashing down on our heroes.
