The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Movie / 2012)

This is an interesting idea of a movie. I think years from now, after all three Hobbit movies are released, is the only time we will be able to really tell if Peter Jackson made the right choice of extending the Hobbit, a 300 page fast read, into three separate three hour movies. As it stand right now, The Hobbit comes across as a lovely adventure movie, possibly stretched a little too thin.

What the Hobbit does have going for it is a fantastic and much more compelling lead, Bilbo. Gone are the days of Frodo mopping around and chewing up the screen. Here we have a great performance by Martin Freeman that delivers a lot of heart and laughs, and it is on his shoulders alone that I enjoyed the length of this movie and didn't stray into the "whys" too often.

That isn't to say I didn't have some brushes with the "whys", you'd be hard pressed not to. There are two musical numbers in this movie. Peter Jackson takes an hour establishing a universe he already spent 9 hours establishing already. There is something about a Necromancer. There are more, but they seem really trivial when you look at the big picture, and that picture was a good time.

Only the full "Hobbit" experience will show if this was vanity, greed or genius on the part of Peter Jackson and New Line. For now, it is a fitting entry along side The Lord of the Rings film, building up a lot of promise, and slight dread, and the following two movies.
