Fringe: Season 5 (TV / 2012)
Here we are at the end of an adventure and with Fringe we are treated to, well, a throw away season that did nothing to raise or lower my admiration of the previous 5 seasons. What we do have is a truly sci fi romp through a distopian future in which the team works to end an invasion of Observers. It was often times fun, a little uneven and maybe a little overly dramatic but it was more Fringe, which is never a bad thing.
At the forefront of the season is a time jump to the future. Remember, this is a future of an alternate timeline that only exsisted in season 5. With me still? Good.
Here the Fringe team is reassembled and are brought the task of retrieveing tapes that Walter has made as a way of fighting the Observers. But wait, these tapes are locking in amber and can only be retirieved one at a time and they are Betamax so they look like old Dhama videos! Yes, there are some pretty awful plot devices but that doesn't take away to much.
We are treated to a strained marriage of Peter and Olivia, with Peter truly losing it by becoming an Observer. But worry not, he is brought around by the power of love. And really that is all Olivia had to due for 9 episodes, pine after Peter. It was a little jarring, but worth it once she got her swagger back and began kicking ass again.
There is another moment, like in season 5, where Walter is bestowed the memories of original Walter so he has more of a connection with Peter. This is done to make Walter's eventual sacrafice to leave to the future even more heartbreaking. And it would be if there was not some weird paradox talk and such about him disapearing in the past and blah blah blah.
Season 6 didn't need to happen, and if you finish it the showrunners seem to agree as the only thing that really happens is Walter disapears. I thought more Fringe would be great even if they changed the formula dramatically, but this was a little too much.
