Review: THOR: The Dark World (MOVIE / 2013)
The second "Marvel Phase 2" movie hit theaters this last weekend and like Iron Man 3 before it, we are treated to an amazingly fun film. Everything that you have come to expect from Marvel's films is here, and even though it met all of my expectations I was still surprised by what they were able to do.
Where I felt the first Thor did a serviceable job of introducing us to this unique universe, it was a very disjointed film. Like many sequels before it, The Dark World thrives on the fact that we do not have to have so many heavy handed moments of exposition to explain what's happening. Instead we are treated to a well paced, clever and much more technically sound movie (the increased budget is very noticeable). Even more surprising is the amount of laughs to be found in a movie called "The Dark World".
While all of the actors do a good job with their time on screen, not enough can be said for Tom Hiddleston's portrayal of Loki. It's not that the movie is boring when he's not on screen, rather the moments he is are simply brilliant and the definition of "show-stealing". On the opposite end of the spectrum is another odd usage of Natalie Portman's talents, as she comes off as a young, naive schoolgirl again. It's not as awkward as the original film, but the romance between Hemsworth's Thor and Portman's Jane still comes off as a little forced.
Never wanting to spoil things, I love how the film ended. This definitely feels like the second movie of a trilogy, rather than a small part of the Avenger's Saga. Go and see this movie, you will be smiling the entire time (and remember to stay through the credits!).
